DEMAND for graduates in the UK with skills related to sustainability is booming. Academia is waking up to the need to train specialists in green architecture, chemistry and engineering.
Dean Millar founded the world’s first ever BSc course in Renewable Energy at Exeter University after working as an industry consultant.
He said: “A lot of companies were complaining that there was a lack of bright young people suitably trained to work in the renewables business.”
Now his course has around 90 students learning the ins and outs of biomass, tidal, solar and offshore wind power.
Their career prospects are incredibly bright. Employment opportunities are not just limited to the energy sector, but segue into the regulatory and, increasingly, investment sectors as well.
“The big boys are moving in. The returns to be had are significant, especially in terms of wind development,” said Millar. “Financial firms need expertise across the board so they can make sensible investment decisions.”
Students on York University’s Master’s course in Green Chemistry are ideally placed to take advantage of the growing demand in industry for graduates with waste minimization skills.
Professor James Clark is founder of York’s Green Chemistry Centre for Excellence and the world’s leading green chemistry journal, Green Chemistry. He said: “We are now talking to producers of automobiles, electronics, furniture and pharmaceuticals, people who need to use chemistry but don’t think of themselves as chemists.”
As waste production legislation becomes increasingly strict, the traditional emphasis on making as much of a chemical as possible is shifting towards minimizing the waste that process creates. “A lot of chemicals are made from petroleum, but we are developing sustainable ways to make carbon, typically from biomass such as dead plants and trees,” said professor Clark.
All of last year’s graduates quickly found employment, some receiving multiple job offers in a variety of different fields.
Li Li, a 26-year-old Chinese postgraduate student, graduated from York in 20xx. She said:
“I hadn’t heard about green chemistry in China. It was a new area and I was curious. Now the government back home needs people who know about these principles.”
Deep in the heart of Wales, 400 students at the Centre for Alternative Technology’s (CAT) Graduate School of the Environment are busy designing and building everything from high insulation wood housing to wind power turbines. With energy costs rising, building firms are increasingly looking to minimize the energy wasted heating and lighting homes, a service CAT students are well-equipped to provide.
A new institute is being built to meet the burgeoning demand for places and a distance learning facility will be launched next September so foreign students can complete CAT courses from home.
The expertise being taught on these courses is essential to a continually expanding range of companies and government authorities. Yet there is a larger goal at stake; the students are at the forefront of the battle against climate change. In the words of Dean Millar, “If we’re going to save the planet, we need to start turning these people out in big numbers.”

It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish must bethrown away or reused properly. Or it may cause a lot of problems. It maypollute the air and water. People may get ill when they breathe the polluted airor drink the polluted water.
Our city has started to face the problem. Some rubbish is sorted and sentto a certain place .Waste gas is cleaned before it goes into the air. Wastewater is also cleaned before it is poured into rivers.
People should be prevented from throwing rubbish everywhere. We should tryour best to take care of our environment and fight against pollution.

Many people are active in fighting against unfair treatment to coloredpeople, women , animals and so on. Right now I am talking about fighting forrespect to our environment. Though the environment doesn’t have a mouth todeprecate what humans have done to her, she retaliates through action. In theearly years the Chinese cut down large quantities of trees, at the source of theyellow river, which led to the disappearance of big forests and terrible floods.As a result,the Huangtu plateau which was once covered with grass and forestswas turned into barrens that supported fewer plants. Another example was inseveral developed countries. Measures should be taken to protect the environment on which we arerelying. First governments should forbid destroying vegetation, rivers andlakes, oceans, as and the atmosphere as well. Second voices should be made toannounce the public of the importance of protecting the environment. Thirdenterprises should pay special attention to the effect they have on theenvironment and work out solutions for the problems.Only by changing the way wetreat the environment can we get along well with it. Harmony with the environment is that we live in on Earth, who is a naturalson, and not only to natural persons as the conqueror, as we all know, there isonly one earth and the mountains on Earth, the animals.

Generally speaking, there are four sorts of waste. They are material waste,organic waste, inorganic waste and poisonous & harmful waste. Now, we aregoing to talk about each sort of waste one by one.
Material waste: it means the waste of substance or things from whichsomething else can be made. For example, people throw away the used metalproducts and buy a new one, so the old metal waste accumulates. At last, theybecome waste. For example, when people finish reading newspaper, the paper willbecome waste. When the glass is broken, it also becomes waste. Nobody wants touse a broken window or drink with a broken glass or wear a pair of brokenglasses. Once it is broken, it becomes waste. The rate of using plastics isincreasing day by day. People use plastic bags because they are convenient. Whenthey get home, they throw the plastics way, paying no attention to theenvironment. The more convenience plastics brings to us, the more plastic wasteis produced. This is called “white pollution” as most plastics are white. Someof our products we use every day are made of rubber, just like the tyres and thebottom part of our shoes. It’s true that rubber plays an important role in ourlife. However, it also brings us some trouble when it has been used for a longtime and becomes old. The old tyres become waste because it can’t break down bynature. This is really a big problem.
Nowadays, the environmental protection is becoming one of the most important issues in the world. Being one of the members of our society, what shall we do to protect the environment?
First, stop using plastic bags, boxes and bottles. Stores should be required to use the bags, boxes and bottles which are made from paper.
Secondly, more and more trees and flowers should be planted to keep our surrounding clean. People must be required to plant plants around their houses and work places.
Finally, we must control the pollution by law, according to which, polluted water and air exhausted from factories should be forbidden.
These are some of the measures that we can take to protect our environment and they are not hard tasks for us. Remember, the earth is the only planet we could live at present.
Since the first day, BNBM has paid more attention to protect the environment as its social responsibility, by developing green building materials, producing green products and creating green enterprise. According to the spirit of "From the nature, for the nature and return to the mature", BNBM has tried its best in developing new technology and improving equipment to reduce the pollution.
Our planet is in trouble!Almost every day we seem to hear of yet anotherproblem affecting the environment - and what a list of problems!- pollution,acidrain,global warming,the destruction of rainforests and other wild habitats,thedecline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants.and soon.
Nowadays,most of us know that these threats exist and that humans havecaused them.Many of us are very worried about the future of our planet andunless we can find a way of solving the problems we have made then theenvironment will suffer even more.
It all sounds so depressing - but we certainly mustn't despair!Every one ofus,whatever age we are,can do something to help slow down and reverse some ofthe damage.We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts - we allhave a responsibility for our environment.We must learn to live in a sustainableway i.e.learn to use our natural resources which includeair,freshwater,forests,wildlife,farmland and seas without damaging them.Aspopulations expand and lifestyles change,we must keep the World in goodcondition so that future generations will have the same natural resources thatwe have.
Here are just a few ideas to help you to do something to protect ourenvironment.
