Celtic believed that the sun god helped them grow crops. But each year thesun god is attacked by an evil force called Samhain and spent six months incaptivity. Samhain, and two other titles, "Lord of Dead" and "Prince ofDarkness", came to Celtic land with cold and dark winters.
The celts are very afraid of the night of October 31, because they feellike there's a bunch of evil souls lurking everywhere. They set fire to theirhome to let evil spirits leave their homes. They believed Samhain had calledthe dead, and they believed that Samhain would turn the dead into somethingelse, like a cat. The celts will be disguising their evil spirits with terribledisguises. (this is the prototype for Halloween.)
Then Rome took over the Celtic lands and put the Roman holiday togetherwith the Celtic Samhain festival on October 31, and it was now Halloween.

the topic of my speech today is “being a good listener”.
good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.
many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn fr-om each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.
what i want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them. in a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.

My name is Jie Lidi. Today, my topic is: “Confidence”. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. But What I want to say is that success is the child of confidence. Without confidence, things can becoenegative and uncofortable.I remember, during an English class, I wanted to make a sentence using the word "listen". I should have said: "I listen to the Voice of America" but I was too nervous and said "I listen to the Noise of America". Everybody in the class laughed. Since then I wanted to train myself to be confident. Now, confidence makes me brave and courageous. Take this speech for example. I wanted to enter this copetition,but I would feel very embarrassed if I made mistakes. Just then, I thought about my dream. My dream is to becoea scientist when I grow up. If I am not confident, how can I overcoedifficulties I face? If I am not confident, how can I succeed in developing myself in the future? I will do it! Today, I am making a speech in public and I feel proud and confident!
I am sure, in the future, with confidence, I will go forward-always forward. Confidence will make my dreams coetrue!

The City Mouse and the Country Mouse
Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in the country." So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."
The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid.
After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."

It was a long four years. Even after I had actually graduated, the nightmares began to haunt me, the university would call to say I hadn’t truly graduated. There had been a mistake and there was just one more class I needed to take. I was always so relieved to wake up and realize that it had only been a bad dream. In reality, I had completed every course needed for my degree, and I was a full-fledged college graduate!
Now, the rest of my life loomed ahead of me. Sometimes a bachelor’s degree prepares you for a specific occupation——you train to be an accountant, you graduate and get a position in an accounting firm. Often, however, your stint in college only prepares you to make further decisions regarding your future. You’re pretty sure what you don’t want to do!
During my senior year of college, I had toyed with the idea of changing my major. At that point, I had finally discovered what captured my heart. But, wanting to finally be finishing school was a stronger pull. So, I took a few courses in physiology and exercise science, but not enough to receive a degree in physical therapy. That would require advanced schooling, beyond my bachelor’s degree——and I just wasn’tready to tackle that. Having completed my B.C. degree, I didn’t have any intentions of furthering my education.
So, I did the safe thing and got an office job——the very thing I was sure that I didn’t want to do! I detested the office policies, the suits I had to wear and the downtown environment that I had to drive to every day. I knew this was not where I belonged.
But god knew what path my career was to follow. A position opened up at the most exclusive health club in our city, so I applied. This was my kind of environment——an active, vibrant kind of place——completely at the opposite end of the spectrum from the office environment where I found myself. The position required that I work Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Perfect, I thought! I could keep my office job Monday through Friday and work at my dream job on the weekends. This arrangement lasted several months until, eventually, a full-time position opened up and I was able to resign from my office job.
Over the next few years, I worked my way up the leader, gaining experience in several different departments. I found my niche as the director of member services——catering to our clientele and providing them with numerous cutting-edge programs. I would have stayed at that job forever——it seemed to be the pinnacle of all my dreams fulfilled. Here were fellow employees who had a passion for the same things that I did——health and fitness. Yet again, god had other plans for my life.Within two years, a newer, bigger, better and more state-of-the-art health club facility was built——just five miles down the road. And, in turn, the owner lost many members to that club. And, in turn, the owner lost thousands of dollars. One by one we were each laid off.
After trying unsuccessfully to land another similar position elsewhere, I knew what I had to do. Go back to school!thanks!

20__年3月，教育部袁贵仁部长在全国两会上指出：“有教无类，因材施教，终身学习，人人成才”是中国教育梦，每一个教育工作者的梦想就是教育学生成为堂堂正正的中国人，成为能够适应21世纪世界发展潮流需要的有用人才。”十五年前，我就是怀着这样的教育梦想义无反顾地选择了教师这个职业。十五年来，我用真情与执着谱写着属于自己和孩子们的简单的幸福。
有了爱，便有了一切；有了爱，便有了教育的源泉。大大的“爱”字，让我真正走进了孩子们的世界。20__年9月，学校安排我到一年级包班。开学第一天，一个叫昌锡明的男孩引起了我的注意，他经常摔倒，摔倒后很难站起来，原来孩子患有先天性肌肉坏死症。由于疾病的原因，每当间操和体育课，锡明就像一只被关在笼子里的小鸟一样孤零零地坐在教室里。第二天课间操时我紧紧地握住锡明的手说：“走，我们一起做操去！”我让他站在班队的最前面，看着他做操。他站不稳了，我马上扶住他；他摔倒了，我马上抱起他，他疲惫了，我用双肩支撑他，他可能受到冲撞时，我用自己的身躯保护他。课间操结束了，我再将他搀回教室。从那天起，每天的间操时，全校师生都会看见我领出一个孩子，又扶回一个孩子。就这样，转眼就是几年。有时，小锡铭上厕所不方便，他实在不好意思总是麻烦同学，就偷偷地在别的班的卫生区里撒了尿。我知道后总是自己悄悄地打扫干净。一天，我在书中发现了一张小纸条，上面写着“老师，谢谢您，谢谢您无私的爱！”看着那熟悉的字迹，我的心不断在震颤，眼圈也在不自觉中潮湿了。
对学生的爱，让我收获着做教师的深深感动，在心与心的碰撞中懂得了什么是幸福。这份幸福更指引着我在业务上刻苦钻研，在不断的成长中细细地体会着教书育人的快乐。
20__年10月，我主动提出在班级进行教学改革。消息一传出，就掀起了轩然大波。有的老师说我是出风头，老师一直这样教，学生一直这样学，不是你说改就能改的。家长有的到学校找我，有的给我打电话，他们都不想让我用他们的孩子做实验！得知消息的丈夫也开始埋怨我自找麻烦。面对着方方面面的阻力，我犹豫过。但一想到班里那么多天天辛苦学习的孩子们，想到他们被强迫接受学习，机械练习、死记硬背的样子，我就又坚定起来。庆幸的是，我的教改计划得到了学校领导的支持与鼓励，这也给了我无穷的动力。我就暗下决心，不但要实施教改，而且一定要成功。于是我自己拿着摄像机主动要求外出听课，发现好的作法就录下来，回到家里一边反复看录像，一边查阅教改资料，一边钻研自己的教改方法。一个又一个不眠的夜晚，一遍又一遍的反复推敲，终于换来了我自己清晰的教改计划。我跟家长们说：“我们的孩子在长期的灌输式学习中变得内向、被动、缺少自信和创造性。因此，我要通过教改培养学生获取知识的能力、分析解决问题的能力以及交流合作的能力。”家长终于被我说服了，临走时他们用仍有疑虑的目光告诉我，自己肩上的担子更重了。
叶圣陶先生说过，教师之为教，不在全盘授予，而在相机诱导。这就要求实施教改的我一定要完成角色上的转变，由课堂的主导者变成引导者。我教改的第一步就是培养学生的质疑能力。已习惯老师提问的学生听到现在要他们自己提问时个个面面相觑。于是我要求每个学生在做预习时都要提问。课堂检查预习时，对提出有新意问题的学生大加表扬。渐渐的，学生问题越来越多，针对性也越来越强，课堂随之活跃起来。接着我开始培养学生解决问题的能力。我有意的把一些小游戏、小故事引进课堂，有时还发动学生把一些玩具带到课堂，营造一种轻松愉快的气氛，学生争着解答问题。那段时间我真是逢山开路，遇水搭桥！一刻也不敢放松的坚持着、尝试着、探索着，越来越多的学生开始适应我的新课堂模式。有一天，我在讲授《刺猬汉斯》一课，当问到文中的两个国王谁对谁错时，从不发言的魏德功第一次大胆的站了起来，他大声地说：“这两个国王的做法都对！从父亲的立场出发，他们都希望自己的女儿幸福。”他的回答遭到大家的质疑，在同学们接二连三的追问中我发现魏德功有些坚持不住了，我当即带头为他鼓起了掌。我从这个孩子与众不同的回答中不但看到他敢于表达的勇气，更读懂了他的'内心，这个生活在离异家庭的孩子多么渴望父爱呀！第二天，我就主动联系了魏德功的父亲。原来，他的父亲患有严重的疾病，根本不能照顾自己的孩子。当我把孩子在校的表现告诉他时，一个高大的男人竟潸然泪下。这时我叫来了魏德功，孩子看到很久没见到的苍老的爸爸，他也哭了。就是从那天起，魏德功变了。每一堂课他都抢着发言，每次活动他都积极参加。魏德功的进步让原来和他一样沉默的孩子看到了希望，于是我发动全班同学帮助他们，谁上网查到了资料就会主动地复印几份，送给家里没电脑的同学，大家互帮互助，资源共享，课堂上再也找不到一个沉默的身影。课堂气氛轻松、愉快，从始至终充满学生质疑声、解答声、讨论声、辩论声、欢笑声，吸引了很多老师来听课，他们亲切地叫我的学生“机灵鬼儿”、“小能豆”，法国教育家第斯多惠所说：“教学的艺术不在于传授本领，而在于激励、唤醒和鼓舞。”这正是我不懈的教育追求。
漫漫长路，一路走来，虽有山重水复疑无路的困惑与辛劳，但更多的是收获了柳暗花明又一村的惊喜和幸福。20__年4月，在全校公开课《隐姓埋名三十年》上，李嘉欣同学恰如其分地引用《卜算子·咏梅》赞颂王承书的淡泊名利，无私奉献，让所有的老师赞叹不已。20__年12月，在全区教改公开课《将相和》上，江如蓝同学图文并茂的为大家讲解赵王为秦王鼓的瑟是高档乐器，而秦王为赵王击的缶是低档乐器，这一点也可以说明是赵王胜了，把听课的老师惊呆了。不到12岁的小姑娘翟丁玉写出了两万多字的小说《回忆的天空》。百灵鸟李雨青在全国青少年读书演讲活动中获一等奖。教改的五年里，我所带过的两个班级语文成绩一直在全区名列全茅。我的教改终于被大家认可了，并在全区推广，这让我拥有了一份期盼已久的成功的幸福。这种幸福再一次让我坚信自己选择教改的正确，分数只能伴随学生一时，能力才能伴随学生的一生。
空谈误事，实干兴教。教师的工作虽然忙碌，但我过得充实，过得快乐。三尺讲台使教师照亮了别人，也升华了自己。那一张张天真无邪的小脸，那一颗颗纯洁善良的童心，那一次次与学生的情感交流，那一回回与学生的心灵碰撞，都为我平添了一份惊喜、一份期待、一份感动、一份幸福。我热爱着我的学生，热爱着我的教育事业，就是这种热爱一直激励着我前进，激励着我为孩子们的终身发展不断探索高效课堂改革之路。我相信在我的爱与坚持下，今日含苞欲放的花蕾，明日一定能盛开成绚丽的花朵。
